  1. Hello. I came here from DoA, and as a long time resident of Japan, I just can’t let this pass. I am sure this person isn’t you, but. Don’t touch the trees. Don’t touch the flowers. And certainly never climb the trees! Friends don’t let friends make bad impressions of foreigners.

“Japanese news broadcasts have reported on the foreigners, specifically Chinese tourists, climbing sakura trees for the perfect selfie and eventually breaking some of them because the trees are quite fragile. Some cultures might accept tree climbing, but cherry blossom trees are so delicate that you might break the branches by applying pressure while touching them.”

The word hanami means “admire the cherry blossoms”, so remember that it’s forbidden to touch the cherry trees, shake or break branches, walk on the roots, pick the flowers or burn the trunks. The cherry trees are fragile: damage prevents regrowth of their flowers and could lead to exposure to disease or even death.

    1. Yes, that’s not me… I can’t take a picture like that of myself!
I admit that I didn’t know that sakura tree climbing was taboo… thank you for taking the time to mention it.
